A crown is a full coverage restoration, that is, it completely encases the tooth. Crowns strengthen and protect tooth structure and can improve the overall appearance of your teeth.
Indications a crown could improve your dental health and overall smile include:
- A previously filled tooth where more filling exists than tooth and the existing tooth structure can no longer support the filling;
- After root canal treatment, when teeth may be may be more susceptible to fracture and need to be protected by a crown;
- In the case of fracture, extensive damage by decay or discoloration of the teeth;
- Where the aesthetic of the existing tooth compromises your entire smile.
Crowns can be made from different materials which include ceramic, porcelain fused to metal and gold alloy. At Shire Dental, we assist our patients to choose the best material for their individual case.
Once crowned, the tooth looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, whilst being completely protected.
A fixed bridge is one way to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge usually consists of two crowns placed on the teeth either side of the gap, which then support an artificial tooth which fills in the gap.
It is essential to insert a replacement tooth shortly after a tooth is lost, as surrounding teeth may move into the space changing your bite over time. This changed bite may result in sore jaws, gum disease or decay (due to difficulty in cleaning the area).
This treatment is staged in two visits.
The first visit is for the preparation of the teeth either side of the gap, taking impressions and placing temporary restorations. The second visit is for final cementation of the bridge and adjustments.
Shire Dental bridges are made from highly aesthetic porcelain, which will restore the look, feel and function – just like a natural tooth!
