Shire Dental Centre :: Dental Implants
In addition to the traditional way of replacing a tooth with a bridge, we now have the ability to provide a permanent solution that is very close to a natural tooth replacement.
Dental Implants provide a way of replacing your missing tooth without having to disturb the teeth adjacent to the gap – if the teeth sadjacent to the gap are completely healthy you may not want to have these prepared to support a bridge.
What is a Dental Implant?
An implant is a screw-like fixture that is surgically placed into your jawbone. A specialised attachment is then attached to support the final restoration, which can be a crown or a support anchor for a bridge or denture.
The actual dental implant surgery varies depending on a combination of factors. Once a consultation has taken place and the necessary diagnostic stages are complete, the actual implant treatments are staged over 3 appointments. The time between appointments can also vary depending on healing.
- At your first visit the implant will be placed surgically into your bone and then covered over to heal. Your bone will fuse to the fixture to create a strong support for the replacement tooth.
- At the second visit the dental implant will be exposed and the measurements and impressions are then taken to fabricate the final restoration.
- On the third visit your final restoration will be connected to your implant via a special connection.
- Follow up visits are necessary to monitor the full healing process. Dental Implants are the most effective long-term replacement for teeth!
